Creative Writing Workshop: for children 11 years or older:
Write Your Own 'Unlikely Friendship' Story: A Fun and Friendly Creative Writing Workshop

Seminar Room

Whatever your previous experience of creative writing, you are welcome here! This will be a fun and relaxed session in which I’ll guide you through the steps of dreaming up your very own short story. We’ll take the theme of ‘unlikely friendship’ as our starting point, as this was the inspiration for of my novel ‘Common Ground,’ but you will be totally free to go wherever your imagination takes you! There’ll be no pressure to share your work if you don’t want to, and absolutely no wrong answers. You’ll also have the chance to ask questions about writing, books and life as a writer.

Naomi Ishiguro was born in London, in 1992. Her debut novel, 'Common Ground,’ and short story collection, ‘Escape Routes,’ have both recently been published by Headline. She's a graduate of the University of East Anglia's MFA Creative Writing Programme, and has worked as both a Secondary school English teacher and a freelance creative writing teacher. She also spent a lovely two years in her early 20s working as a bookseller and bibliotherapist at Mr B's Emporium of Reading Delights in Bath.

Common Ground (YA age range)

Did you ever have a friend who made you see the world differently? It's a lonely life for Stan, at a new school that feels more ordeal than fresh start, and at home where he and his mother struggle to break the silence after his father's death. When he encounters fearless, clever Charlie on the local common, all of that begins to change. Charlie's curiosity is infectious, and it is Charlie who teaches Stan, for the first time, to stand on his own two feet. But will their unit of two be strong enough to endure in a world that offers these boys such different prospects?

Please note: The 'Common Ground' book may not be suitable for under 14's, parental discretion advised. The creative writing workshop will be looking at unlikely friendships and will be suitable for anyone over 11 years.

Only children attending need a ticket; the accompanying adult does not need a ticket.
